Andy Brownell

Andy has had a life-long passion for building things. Yankee ingenuity,
and a family history of antiques were fostered in his father's basement shop,
and then in high school wood class. He learned to appreciate and apply the finer
skills of furniture making through a weekend apprenticeship with Jeff Miller (J. Miller Handcrafted Furniture) in Chicago, IL. This eight year experience gave him an understanding of hand and power tools, but more importantly, nuance of design, and the attention to detail and finish needed in fine, hand-made custom furniture. In a world of mass-produced knock-offs and particle board junk, Andy has made it a personal mission to help his generation appreciate great furniture and eventually craft every piece of furniture in his home.

I finally got around to finishing up the wall shelves. They received by traditional finish of Watco Danish Oil and butchers wax. The pair of cherry shelves I started cutting the dovetails by hand at the Woodworking in America Conference was the first to make it to the walls in our bedroom. I simply mounted a pair of keyhole hardware mounts on the back, and leveled some screws to the wall. An additional set of rubber pads, allowed the shelves to sit slighlty proud of the wall, and prevents them from marking the walls. They are a great addition to the bedroom to hold a bunch of neat objects we've been storing away for some time.

The pair of Purple Heart shelves were cut on the dovetail table saw sled I made earlier this month, and they are probably about the tightest set of dovetails I've ever cut. Even when cutting through the tough, hard grain of purple heart, I'm still surprised at the results. My daughter is happy to have a place to keep some of her favorite pictures and special things.

I'll share some progress on the over-the-top saw horses I'm working on that are made out of some walnut I had in the shop.
